Going Shopping!

So you've bought a puppy! Hooray!

You don't need a ton of stuff. Here's what I think is important to have!

Puppy Food (of course!)
I've been feeding these babies 4 Health brand puppy food. You can read about it here. It has really good ratings and I've switched all my dogs over to it. I found it at Tractor Supply. I'm sure you can get it at PetsMart, etc. Tractor Supply is just more convenient for me! Oh! You will need to feed puppy food for about a year. Ask your vet what they recommend.

Food and Water Bowls

Collar and Leash

Chew Toys
Just about anything will do. Lots of people love the Kong brand of toys. My dogs don't love them, go figure! But these puppies like to chew so I would strongly suggest something appropriate for them to chew on!

Shampoo
My vet just recommended bathing your puppy in baby shampoo. You can buy other shampoo which is probably more expensive but I just love the smell of baby shampoo!

Personally, these are the only really necessary items to have. Everything else is just fluff.

Indoor Kennel/Crate
I would strongly advise kennel training your puppy. We have had such good success with kenneling. Keep in mind to buy a large kennel for your puppy because they will (quickly) grow into medium to large dogs! We prefer a metal wire kennel. Our dogs will sometimes just come inside and go lay in their kennel even with the doors open. It's a safe place for them and they just love having their own space. You can google and research kennel training to see if it's right for you!

Toys
Our dogs love stuffed animals. And rather than enduring the drama which ensues when one is stolen from my daughter (seriously!!) we found that the "stuffing-less" animals are the best for us. Our dogs mostly just love the stuffed animals to rip the stuffing out and make a huge mess so the one's without stuffing work best for us!

Dog Bed
Honey loves her dog bed, the boys not so much. It's nice for them to have a place to lay. Just buy one that is large enough with their future size in mind!

Of course you can buy just about anything your heart desires. I've had a few new dog owners ask what they need so I just thought I'd put my two cents into the game.

Giving back

Recently I've been confronted and asked about why I have bred these puppies when there are so many animals in shelters just waiting for homes. It's a legitimate question.

We've adopted pets from the animal shelter before. One of the first dogs my husband and I had together was literally rescued from an animal testing facility. He was a beautiful, full-size Walker Hound. I was in love with him because I'd always been a horsewoman and dreamed of fox hunting. He was a good buddy but had so many issues due to his previous mistreatment.

We "adopted" our first Golden Retriever, Champ, from a dear friend. She was a horse breeder and needed to cut down on the number of mouths she needed to feed. He was about 2 years old when we got him. He was literally the best dog we've ever had. Ever ever.

Since then we've been hooked on Goldens. And really, that's our story. We brought Honey into our lives a few years ago and she is such a joy. Every one loves her. Everyone loves her so much that people began asking us if we would ever consider breeding her. And, after several people asking we decided that we could give it a try! But that's another story.

This is about giving back.

My daughter, Chloe, is an animal lover. LOVER. She plans on having a vet clinic and wants to rescue sea turtles. We donate to the sea turtles. We donate to save the whales. We donate goods to the Humane Society (blankets, treats, food). We watch Sea Rescue on Saturdays. Anytime we see a coin drive on a counter for Fuzzy Friends or whatever animal shelter needs help, she is on it. Did I mention the sea turtles? We talk about the sea turtles almost every single day.

Last year on her 8th birthday (56 in dog years!) she decided that instead of presents she wanted her friends to bring toys and treats and food to donate to an animal shelter. We chose Happy Endings Rescue Shelter in Hewitt. It was really so much fun. They took all of us in and we got to play with the dogs and love on them and give our treats and toys. It was a truly fulfilling day.

I think animal shelters are wonderful places and we have adopted animals from shelters and totally support that decision. I believe it's a personal decision you can make and finding a four-legged fuzzy friend is about finding the one who is best for you and your family. That's the bottom line.

And, please support the sea turtles!

Big Day!

So, last Friday the pups had a big day! My daughter and I loaded all of them up, plus mama of course, and headed to the vet for check-ups!

When you show up at the vet with a bunch of puppies you get plenty of attention! Of course our puppies were the cutest they've seen! ; ) Look at that proud mama!

Everyone was weighed, wormed, got first set of shots and was given a thumbs up! We even started everyone on Revolution, it's a 3 in 1 heart worm, flea and tick medicine that is applied directly to their skin.

Can we just pause to look at that face? Sweet baby!

It was quite an outing and everyone was completely tuckered out! If I could have just laid on the floor like that I might have, too!

These puppies are growing so fast and bring us such joy every day! I'd love for you to come meet them. You will certainly fall in love!

What's for dinner?

Knowing what dog food to feed your dog is a lot more complicated than I had ever thought! I was researching different puppy foods, because it's almost time for the puppies to start eating some food!

I came across this website and it is VERY helpful!

http://www.dogfoodadvisor.com

Just thought I'd share so maybe you can help decide for yourself. I haven't decided what to feed them just yet. Last litter we chose Science Diet but I think we might try something different this time! I will let you know!

awwwwwwwwww

Just look at that sweet face!

A Few Things We've Learned Along the Way

Goldendoodles are such a joy. We love our boys so much. This is what we've learned by living with and loving these special dogs.

Goldendoodles are:

  • smart They are easy to train. We've kept up with several of our babies and they've all been so easy to house train, crate train, and just easy to teach to be good, obedient citizens. In the morning I have them help me wake the kids up. All I have to say is go wake up the boys and they are off. Score!
  • sort of high maintenance We loved having our boys long and shaggy but they are super hard to keep them tidy and mat-free. We joke that Chief could be a show dog because he l-o-v-e loves to be groomed and brushed and fussed over. Scout wants nothing to do with it. Despite our best efforts we ended up having to have them shaved. Goldendoodles need regular grooming, whether you can do it yourself or have to take them, their fur can get matted and then it's impossible to keep. We loved the look of our boys when they were shaved (once we got over the fact that they were super tiny under all that curly hair) because it was so easy to take care of them. And I think now the ideal legnth I will keep my boys is about a 2-3"" cut. It's super easy to brush and take care of but long enough to still have the cute, cute doodle curls.
  • playful our boys are wrestle and play and rough house with the best of them. but the best part is that they are not hyper. they can be outside playing and running around and then come inside and  be perfect house dogs and calm down.
  • chill see above. For still being big puppies (18 months old) they don't run around the house like banshees. They don't jump on visitors. They are very interested in visitors and want to be loved by visitors (I mean who doesn't!!) but they aren't in your face or overbearing.
  • easy to love what's not to love about a dog with a permanent smile on their face? See what I mean?

"They" say Goldendoodles are:
  • low shedding I've found this to be true. But when you have a golden retriever then every dog is low shedding compared. LOL. But seriously, these dogs rarely shed and that is a very, very welcome trait!
  • hypoallergenic While I don't know about this scientifically a friend and I are going to test this theory out. Her son is highly, highly allergic to dogs and recently they just did a little test with a terrier/spaniel mix and it didn't work out. We plan on having a playday just to see how this claim holds up. So stay tuned! The real claim is that the multi-generational dogs have more hypoallergenic qualities. My puppies are what is called F1. That means they are 50% golden retriever (mom) and 50% standard poodle (dad), thus first generation. My basic understanding is that multi-generational dogs are considered a goldendoodle that is either bred back to a poodle (F1B) or a goldendoodle (F1) bred to a golden doodle (F1). There's a lot of information out there to learn more about this and the qualities of each generation.
Let me know if you have any questions! I'm not an expert by any means but I love to share about how wonderful these dogs are!

Have a great day!
